The Ontario 4-H Program is about Opportunities, personal development, making friends, and having fun. 4-H helps young people (10-21 years of age) learn self-confidence and new skills. Members also learn communication and leadership skills, problem solving, and goal setting.

JUNIOR COMMITTEE

LOCAL ACHIEVEMENT DAYS

All 4-H members in the Ashton, Carp, Richmond/Stittsville & West Carleton 4-H Clubs taking a beef or dairy project must participate in an Achievement Program approved by the Carleton 4-H Association in order to receive credit for their 4-H Project.

4-H FIELD CROPS & LIFESKILLS

All 4-H members in Ottawa Carleton taking a 4-H Field Crop/Horticulture project must exhibit their project entry at the Carp Fair. 4-H Field Crop & Horticulture members must enter one project crop grown on a 2009 member plot in one of the following project classes:
(Additional entries must be entered in the Open Classes provided by the fair and abide by their rules).


NOTE: Members may exhibit only ONE type of project (i.e. potatoes) in the county per year.

1. Grain - 5 lbs. (2.3 kg)
2. Corn - 10 ears
3. Hay - 1 four-inch flake (not from a round bale) of cut hay. Entry must be properly labelled for the appropriate class.
i) First Cut Alfalfa- 85% or more alfalfa
ii) First Cut Legume other than Alfalfa - 85% more legume
iii) First Cut Legume and Grass - 70% and 30% either way
iv) First Cut Grass - 85% or more grass
v) Second Cut Alfalfa or other Legume - 85% or more legume
vi) Second Cut Mixed legume and grass - 70% and 30% either way
4. Haylage or Corn Silage - 5 lbs. (2.3 kg)
5. Soybeans - 5 lbs. (2.3 kg)
6. Potatoes - 10 tubers - variety named
7. Any horticulture project or field crop approved by your
4-H leader(s).
8. Weed Identification Poster or Booklet (10 weeds identified & labelled)
9. Seed Identification Poster
Herbs - a labelled collection of more than 3 - 10 specimens.
Carrots - 5 specimens on a disposable plate
Cucumber - 3 specimens on a disposable plate
Pumpkin - 2 specimens
Tomato - 5 specimens on a disposable plate
10. Special – one page of scrapbooking displaying proper scrapbook design and techniques
11. Handmade card (any occasion)
12. Beaded Article
13. Photo (4 x 6) taken by the exhibitor (agriculture theme) mounted on card stock
14. Any item of baking (3 items per plate) i.e Cookies or Squares
** Note: Baking products are to be displayed on a small disposable plate inserted in a zip top plastic bag. Recipe included on small recipe card and attached to all baking products.
15. A collection of your own garden vegetables and/or herbs attractively displayed in a basket and labelled (include at least 5 different varieties).
16. A gift basket of homemade items (must contain at least 3 items) baking and crafts.
17. Any craft item
18. Any vegetable to be judged on presentation (ie. Correct number of specimens according to the horticulture judging handbook, cleanliness, etc.)
19. A poster of photography (a collection of 8 to 10 photos) – Your Club in Action
20. A “ME” poster (collection of photos/pictures and a typewritten one page (8 ½ x 11) article telling about yourself mounted on bristle board
21. A poster to Promote a new 4-H project
22. One article of handmade jewellery to be displayed on a disposable plate in a ziptop bag
23. An article of stitchery (knitting, crocheting, quilting, cross stitchery, etc.)
24. Article of sewing

NOTE: Posters are to be 22” x 28” – 55.99 cm x 71.12 cm

2009 4-H CLUB CALVES ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM

1. Open to 2009 4-H members with a calf project.
2. Conformation and showmanship classes will be judged. 3. Creditable entries are eligible for the Carleton 4-H Championship Show.
4. Trophies will be presented to the Top Overall Showpersons and First Year Showpersons in each of the Dairy and Beef Shows.

2009 4-H CLUB CALVES ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM

Creditable entries are eligible for the Carleton 4-H Championship Show, Metcalfe Fair, October 3rd , 2009. Members will be notified by their leader, of eligibility. It will be the responsibility of the 4-H member to advise their leader immediately if they elect not to attend the 4-H County Championship Show.

4-H DAIRY AND BEEF CLUB ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Calves to be on the grounds and in place by 8:00 a.m.

Dairy Show -10:00 a.m. - Cattle Ring - Indoor Show Ring
Beef Show - 11:30 a.m. - Cattle Ring - Indoor Show Ring

1. Calves to be on the grounds and in place by 8:00 a.m.
2. For all Dairy Classes, 4-H members should wear clean white pants and shirts, safe footwear (no running shoes) and 4-H headbands. No hats will be allowed.
3. For all Beef Classes, 4-H members must wear dark pants (no blue jeans), safe footwear (no running shoes) and a white shirt, and show harness or belt clip. No hats will be allowed.
4. ALL 4-H livestock projects must be trained and prepared by the 4-H Member only.
5. Under no circumstances should an animal exhibiting signs of transmittable disease be taken to Achievement Day. In the event of an animal unable to participate in the Achievement Program, because of health problems, the member will be given credit for completion of the club. Written notification of a health problem must be given to Lynda McCuaig, the day of the show. The member will be allowed to show another 4-H member's calf in the Showmanship Class. Animals unable to show at Achievement Day will not be eligible to attend the 4-H County Championship Show at Metcalfe or at the Eastern Ontario/Western Quebec 4-H Regional Championship Show.
4-H TIE-UP COMPETITION

1. Open to all 4-H Clubs exhibiting livestock at Achievement Day (i.e. Dairy and Beef).
2. Judging to take place several times while the 4-H livestock projects are at Achievement Day.
3. Judging to be based on:
a) Appearance (50) - General appearance of animals, including bedding, feed, equipment as deemed necessary, safety and cleanliness. (b) Attitude/Team Effort (50) - Attitude of members, courtesy, neatness, completeness of information. (c)4-H Leaders have received copies of the judging criteria.
4. ALL 4-H members must tie their calves together as a club unit. No exceptions will be granted.
Prize money: 1st $10.00 2nd $8.00 3rd $6.00 and $4.00 to remaining entries.

OBJECTIVES OF THE JUNIOR FAIRS
1. To supplement and encourage junior activities as organized in Ottawa Carleton.
2. To improve the educational value of the Fairs.
3. To encourage youth to become open class exhibitors.
4. To stimulate the interest of youth in the Fair working as members representing 4-H program.

GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. Participation in the Junior Fair is open to young men and women enrolled in the 4-H program in Ottawa Carleton who are between the ages of 10 and 21 years as of January 1, 2009 unless otherwise stated in the Prize List.
2. 4-H Club members may compete at more than one Class "A" or Class "B" Fair in the same class in any one year.
3. Clubs may enter an exhibit or display at no more than one Class "A" or Class "B" Fair in any one year.
4. Junior Fair Exhibitors may exhibit in the open classes of each Fair by complying with the regulations of that fair.
5. The Junior Fair Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry, which in their opinion, is not in the best interest of the Junior Fair. The 4-H Fair Committee reserves the right to call in a veterinarian for a professional opinion should the need arise.
6. All participants in the Junior Fair are expected to act and co-operate by showing good manners and behaviour at all times. Persons not complying with this rule will be dealt with by the Committee.
7. 4-H livestock exhibitors are encouraged to display a Canadian 4-H sign whenever possible above their entries the day on which they show their animals.
8. 4-H livestock entries must comply with the health standards of the Fair.
9. Exhibits and entries may be placed in the Exhibit Hall Building on Wednesday evening, September 23rd, between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. and may not be removed until September 27th between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. ALL MEMBERS EXHIBITING ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PICKING UP THEIR OWN ENTRIES.
10. EXHIBITS ELIGIBLE FOR THE REGIONAL 4-H SHOW WILL BE IDENTIFIED BY THE JUDGE AT THE TIME OF JUDGING.
